Modern Board Games

Things have moved on significantly in the board game world since Monopoly, Cleudo or Risk.  Now there are fantastic modern games such a Ticket to Ride, Agricola, Wingspan, Ark Nova and Terraforming Mars.  These are mentally stimulating games of strategy and skill which also involve decision making and, most importantly, are great fun to play.

If you're interested in trying out these types of board games, please contact Chris Penny on 07554 867216 or email Chris.penny24@yahoo.co.uk.  The meetings will be at Chris's home in Addingham on Wednesdays, fortnightly to begin with but could be weekly if the demand is there.

Open Canoeing

Based at Yeadon Tarn Activity Centre. Enjoy the adventures and challenge of paddling an open canoe for two people! You will learn:

  • How to paddle in a straight line
  • Importance of safety on the water and team work
  • How to sail an open canoe
  • Good progress will enable opportunities to explore other lakes.

You are required to be able to swim, have good health and fitness and able to sit and kneel in a boat. An activity for those who are enthusiastic with a sense of fun. For further information please contact geraldrichardson@hotmail.co.uk or telephone 07732972776.

Pickleball A mix of badminton, tennis and table tennis which we’re looking to play indoors on badminton courts.  See this link for more information. Please express your interest in this fun and exhilarating sport to newgroups@ilkleyu3a.orgIf enough people are enthusiastic, we'll look for suitable venues
Front Room Films A new Zoom-based film discussion group starts Monday 24th October from 1:30pm to 2:30pm and every fortnight thereafter. This is a second film discussion group to be established in a short period as the first one proved so popular.

Two weeks before each meeting a readily available film on a non-subscription service (usually BBC iPlayer or All4) will be chosen. Group members watch the film at their leisure and then meet via Zoom to discuss the film. Both iPlayer and All4 carry a significant number of non-mainstream and/or foreign language films, so we plan to explore some of the lesser-known film selections

If you are interested, or want to find out more, please send an email to Jacqui Wellbrook (jacqui.wellbrook@gmail.com) or Lee Wellbrook (lee.wellbrook@gmail.com).

Electric Bike Group Nick Harding thinks there’s an opportunity for the growing number of electric bike owners to meet and have fun exploring the local countryside. The idea is to stick to quiet roads or bridle paths, going at a modest pace for perhaps 20 miles and in a group of no more than ten. This would be mid-week weather- dependent with stops for refreshments and to admire the view. So, a gentle outing, getting some fresh air and enjoying the gorgeous scenery. If you fancy the idea, email Nick on nick@harding.net or 'phone Margaret McCabe, New Groups Co-ordinator on 07483 896046.
