ILKLEY & DISTRICT u3a

Ilkley U3a Northern Towns Group

Who are we?

The aim of the group is to enjoy making new friends whilst participating in interesting visits to northern towns, learning more about their history, architecture, industry or other points of interest.

We currently have about 100 members in the group. In practice, most visits have around 35 participants which is a comfortable number when travelling via the community mini buses.

Our visits benefit from the U3A tour guide system that has helped everyone to hear the various guides and has proved particularly beneficial to those who no longer hear as well as they once did!

What do we do?

On the 3rd Thursday of each month (March to October) a member of our group volunteers to organise a visit. See the pictures of a few places recently visited.

Transport is via Community Minibus or public transport for local visits. Longer trips are by coach. Once at our destination, first stop is toilets and coffee followed by a guided tour of the town.
Some members are happy to undertake their own research and lead these tours. Others arrange for a local guide to explain points of interest. This is all undertaken at a leisurely pace with time for a rest as we go. After lunch, there is normally free time or a further tour.

We also enjoy a pre Christmas lunch in November and indoor presentations in January and February.
