Finding your feet
Explore our activities: Our website, www.ilkleyu3a.org, is the best place to discover our interest groups, forthcoming events, monthly talks and other activities. Group information changes regularly, so it's worth looking from time to time.
Come and meet people: Not sure which group to join? Why not start with one of our informal social gatherings in Ilkley, Otley or Guiseley? They're a relaxed way to meet other members and discover what's happening.
Would you like a friendly chat? Sometimes it's easier to talk to someone, particularly when you're new. One of our volunteer trustees would be delighted to have a telephone conversation, answer your questions and help you explore the opportunities available. Simply telephone 0300 102 4549 (local rate call) and leave a voicemail message with your name, telephone number and a convenient time for us to call you back.
How u3a works: One of the things that makes u3a special is that it's run by its members, for its members. We’re a registered charity with no paid staff. Members share their interests, knowledge, experience and enthusiasm, helping each other to learn and enjoy new activities. You don't need to be an expert to contribute. As you settle in, you may discover opportunities to help in small ways or share something you enjoy. Every contribution is valued.
A few useful things to know
Your membership subscription: Our annual full membership fee is currently £15, including a £4 contribution to the Third Age Trust, our national organisation. For those already a u3a member elsewhere, different subscription arrangements apply. Membership includes access to our interest groups, monthly talks and other general activities. Some groups make a small additional charge to cover costs such as room hire, while many are free.
Keeping in touch: Email is our main way of communicating with members. You'll receive our regular Newsflash, containing news, activities and forthcoming events, together with important membership information and renewal reminders. Our website also provides up-to-date information. Members without email receive important documents by post.
Third Age Matters magazine: The national u3a magazine is published five times a year and is available by post if you request it on your membership application. Your name and postal address will be shared with the distributor for this purpose, unless you have opted out.
Photographs at activities: We occasionally take photographs at group activities and events for use in our publications and publicity. If you prefer not to appear in photographs, please let the organiser or photographer know. Further information about how photographs may be used is available in the policy documents in the Members section of our website.
Insurance and participation: Members take part in u3a activities at their own risk. Ilkley & District u3a has Public and Product Liability insurance under an umbrella policy provided through the Third Age Trust. If the incident is not covered by the policy, there is no personal accident cover.
