Pickering is delightful town which developed sometime after 1069 when William the Conqueror built the castle. Its story is told in the Beck Isle Museum, an 18th century house set by the river. From there a 10-minute walk leads through the main street to the medieval church of St. Peter and its 15th century wall paintings, some of the most complete and remarkable in England.

On the day

Coffee and a buffet lunch will on the fourth floor of the Memorial Hall, a former mill. There is a lift, four toilets on the ground floor near the entrance, and two more upstairs.

After coffee we will divide into two groups:

Group A will start their guided walking tour of the town. taking a one mile walk past the historic railway centre towards the castle. This is a hill town where some parts are cobbled so sensible footwear essential. Some parts are uphill but nothing too steep.

We will be using the tour guide system, so please bring your headset, or £3 to purchase a new one.

Group B will explore the Beck Isle Museum. A fascinating place. More info. Then a short walk to the church which has some steps to access. The church has an excellent guidebook to the wall-paintings for which you will need £2 in cash.
