ILKLEY & DISTRICT u3a
Four sessions: Wednesdays 2pm - 3:30pm
8th, 15th, 22nd and 29th July
This four-session course explores the rise, sound, struggles, and lasting influence of Stax Records, the Memphis-based label that helped define Southern soul. From Otis Redding and Booker T. & the M.G.'s to Isaac Hayes and the label's dramatic collapse, the course places Stax within the cultural, racial, and economic realities of mid-20th-century America. Each session will be around 90 minutes (with a short break), followed by a Q&A, and music samples will be used throughout to help demonstrate the subject matter. Refreshments are not provided, but there are a number of cafés within a short distance of the venue.
Use the door on the right of the building, the room is straight ahead. Fully accessible.
