A morning with your sketchbook in the open air. The idea is to make a personal record of a place that you have enjoyed - a moment in time reminding you of where you were, and what you saw that was interesting.

Meet at the Bandstand, and after introductions break into small groups and set off into the town, aiming for a few spontaneous sketches - taking no more than 15 minutes each, if your boredom threshold is anything like mine! It might be a building, a view, a group of people or simply a tree - just anything that takes your fancy and you want to remember.

I am not an artist, or a teacher, but when I travel I sometimes like to make a record instead of a photo. I just enjoy the process of soaking up the atmosphere of a place and quickly making a visual note. Sometimes it works, and is so satisfying and sometimes it doesn't. I don't normally even share them!

This can be for anyone - even if you have never tried it before - but there will be no teaching of techniques, just the opportunity to exchange tips if you want to. Or keep it private if you don't!

We will (depending on weather) stop for a coffee and maybe a drink at a pub at the end to compare notes.

A sketchbook or pad, pen or pencil and (if you fancy a splash of colour) then a small watercolour set. And a stool possibly although there are plenty of benches around the town.

The Urban Sketching movement is world-wide. There is no local group apparently, but their website looks fun. Personally I have found a little book called Urban Sketching Handbook Techniques: 101 tips by Stephanie Bower very inspiring. I will bring my copy. It is available from Amazon.
