u3a Taster Event: The English Civil Wars in Yorkshire

Join us for one of our regular Saturday talks.

The English Civil Wars were one of the nastiest wars fought on our soil and York was the Northern prize. The year 1644 was a significant turning point; the Siege of York and the Battle of Marston Moor won the North for Parliament and without the North the Royalists ultimate defeat became inevitable. Yorkshire and the North were significantly changed by the English Civil Wars, and this talk explores these changes by considering the impact of war on the local area of Ilkley and its families.

Gillian Waters managed the Education department at the Royal Armouries in Leeds, before teaching history courses for the Centre for lifelong learning at the University of York. She has also worked with local museums on various projects. She worked on the Heritage Lottery Fund project to refurbish the Mansion House in York, and also the Heritage Lottery Fund project to digitise the cassette tapes of the long-time editor of the Dalesman magazine, Bill Mitchell, and place them on a website as part other work with Settle Stories.
