Cost £10
This summer at Weecher Reservoir (situated off Otley Road between Menston and East Morton, just east of Dick Hudson's Pub) we will be offering short courses for you to learn how to rig, sail and even race remote control model yachts. We will be using a boat called the DragonFlite 95 which was developed as an introductory class to what has become one of the fastest growing aspects of sailing in the world.
This course is aimed at u3a members who enjoy spending time outdoors, learning a new activity and like a bit of heathy competition. The main focus of the course is to get you sailing the yachts out on the water and learn through tutorials and personal mentoring. No previous sailing experience is necessary and all equipment will be provided.
Tutoring will be headed by John Tushingham, multiple national and world champion in the sport.
The course is £10 per person. If for any reason you wish to withdraw from the course a refund will be issued if your place is taken up from the waiting list.
The DragonFlite 95 yacht is a 950mm long, wind powered racing yacht with no motors. The yacht is controlled by a hand held, battery powered transmitter which gives you control of the steering and sail setting.
During the course you will learn:
- How a wind powered yacht works
- How to control the yacht with the transmitter
- How to sail the yacht at different angles to the wind
- How to sail a race course
- Basic sailing rules and terminology
- How to rig and set up the yacht
and find out how much fun it is.
Participants are welcome to stay on for the afternoon to watch or join in with club sailing.
Hot drinks will be available but if you wish to stay on for the afternoon club racing please bring your own lunch.
Please book early to avoid disappointment.
Please only sign up for this course if you expect to attend all four sessions. However you will still learn many skills if you miss one session.
All sailing equipment is provided, you will just need sturdy shoes and outdoor clothing to suit the weather on the day.
If you enjoyed taking part and would like to take it further you would be most welcome join us at Weecher Radio Sailing Club, where you will get all the help and support you need to progress within the sport.
Payment will be required within 10 days of enrolment otherwise the place will be offered to another person.
