This presentation by Kevin Byron will explore the origins of Paleolithic art and ornament and then will discuss the two great cultures - Celtic and Islamic - that took geometry as ornament to its limit. Examples of a secret language using geometric design are discussed, and short videos are included showing how Celtic and Islamic decorative art forms are created. Finally, the talk will discuss how and why geometry started to appear in abstract art rather in the 20th century.

BIO: With a background of research in telecommunications for some twenty-five years, Kevin later developed a passion for education and taught at the University of Leicester and then at Queen Mary, University of London. More recently he undertook research in creative thinking skills in art and science and has published and lectured widely to a variety of audiences on his interest in these subjects.
