Pat O'Shea will look at New York on film through the eyes of three of its directors: Woody Allen, Martin Scorsese and Spike Lee.
These Jewish, Italian and African American directors exemplify the diversity of the city. Their films capture both the particularity of their New York communities and the vibrant context of the city, but their appeal and resonance are much wider. We'll use three films as examples: Manhattan, Mean Streets and Do the Right Thing.
Watching the films will enhance the talk but isn't essential to it. They're all rentable for streaming in the usual places. Manhattan is also available with a Prime sub. Or cheap secondhand DVDs on eBay, WOB etc.
BIO: After a career in secondary education, Pat pursued her longstanding passion for film by going back to university. She runs a weekly online film club and helped lead a project to convert her local cinema to community ownership. She has a particular interest in women film makers, and is a fan of independent film and cinemas.
Entrance is FREE
