Martin Peagam will talk about the life of Captain James Cook the great explorer.
Born in Marton, Yorkshire, in 1728, the son of a farmworker, he became an explorer, cartographer and naval officer, best known for his three voyages of discovery in the Pacific and to Australia and New Zealand between 1768 and 1779. To say these voyages were challenging would be an understatement but it is also difficult to overestimate Cook's achievements.
Martin will particularly focus on the themes of Diet, Disease and Death as reflected in the life of Cook himself, what Cook did to safeguard those who sailed with him, and he will also address some myths that have grown up about Cook.
BIO: Martin Peagam is chairman of the Captain Cook Birthplace Trust. and will say a little about the Captain Cook Birthplace Museum which was founded in 1978 in Marton to celebrate the 250th anniversary of Cook's birth.
He will be accompanied by his wonderful hearing dog Inca.
