Hoghton Tower
Hoghton Tower

Guided tours of:

Hoghton Tower: medieval stronghold developed around a Pele Tower with history from James I onwards. This is a fortified manor house standing on a hilltop site east of the village, the highest point in the area. The present house is Tudor, dating from about 1560–65, and is an interesting complex of buildings, said to be haunted. We shall hear tales of its many famous visitors over the centuries, including the diminutive King James I who entered on horseback to enhance his status. He is said to have been so delighted with his delicious estate steak that he knighted it Sir Loin

Samlesbury Hall:

A medieval home with family history and priest holes. The hall was built by Gilbert de Southworth in 1325 and was the primary home of the Southworth family until the early 17th century.  It still retains notable features of a Grade 1 listed Medieval Manor House, including priest holes. It too is said to be haunted

Access: Both buildings are historic and have some uneven surfaces. Both visits involve some walking and standing, and neither building has a lift to the upper floors. Entry to Hoghton Tower is either via two flights of external courtyard steps without handrails or a single flight of narrow steeper steps with a handrail. Entry to Samlesbury Hall is level.

Refreshments: morning coffee at Hoghton Tower, hot lunch at the Boar's Head, Hoghton included in cost
