4 Sessions on Tuesday mornings
10:30 am to 12:30 pm 16th / 23rd / 30th January and 6th February
Cost (to cover room hire) £25

Aim of the course
To open minds as to the possibilities of the technology in our pockets so participants will then have every incentive to undertake their own discoveries of its capabilities.
This course is for those who:
- Have an existing smart phone or tablet that they use regularly.
- Can switch on their devices, link to WIFI, open emails and answer phone calls.
This course is not for those who:
- Regularly use many and probably most of the smart phone features
- Do not have the time to practice between sessions. There will be tasks to practice ahead of each session because it is only with practice that using the power of these devices becomes second nature.
Please bring a fully charged smart phone or tablet and connect this to the venue WIFI. You should also bring a notepad and pen and the charger if you think having it switched on for two hours will be a problem.
What to expect
The course will be led by John Hancock to whom any questions can be directed. Email is shortcourses@ilkleyu3a.org. In an ideal world there will be individual tuition taking account of personal needs and the device being used. However, we do not have that luxury.
Instead John will be taking a variety of scenarios and topics, demonstrating how his devices are used “on the go” and synchronised with content on his home computer. For instance working out how to get from home to see a pantomime in Leeds, which trains to catch, how to buy your train ticket and then check the train is running on time.
Participants will then have time to practice these scenarios and topics on their own device. There will be experienced users of smart phones in support of John to help if anyone gets stuck.
There will, of course, be a half time break for socialising and a drink. Cost of refreshments is £1 in cash.
Next steps
Register for the course. Or ask any questions you may have by emailing shortcourses@ilkleyu3a.org.
Once registered you will be sent an email requesting payment of £25 to cover room hire. Sorry no pro rata payment if you cannot make all of the sessions. A refund will be made if you cancel by 1st January and we are able to fill your place from others on the waiting list.
The email will also give you a short assignment to complete ahead of the first session.
About the venue
A five minute walk up Riddings Road from the Grove. If steps are not a problem, use the path to the right of Christchurch which leads behind the bandstand. Unfortunately no car parking on site. So use public transport or the central car park in Ilkley. Pay for a minimum of 3 hours.
