Our Heritage: What It Is and Should We care about It?

Robin Leleux

'Heritage' is a word much bandied about and seemingly to mean all things to all people, although we do not have time to go down this road other than in passing reference. Rather I want to concentrate on our built environment and its associated artifacts. With further initiatives currently emanating from our local authority concerning both traffic management measures and new housing this is an appropriate time to consider the world we live in locally and nationally. Illustrations will be largely from my own collection.

A word or two about myself. Having taken a London history degree, a career with ancient monuments or museums would have been good but openings then were scarce so history teaching it was. Even after moving into educational personnel work, first with the unions and then with my own management consultancy, history teaching opportunities returned with the WEA and then, once in Yorkshire, Ilkley U3A. By this time too I was helping to organise the annual National Railway Heritage Awards competition. After over thirty years with it I am now in retirement as a Patron, but my interest in the built environment continues, with two important books and regular writing commitments for railway magazines.

Entrance is FREE

Free tea or coffee and a biscuit served from 10.00 when the doors open. The talk starts promptly at 10.30.
