African Children in Peril - the West's toxic legacy

  • 28 Jun 2023
  • 2:30 PM - 4:30 PM
  • Jack Lofthouse Annexe, Clarke Foley Centre, Cunliffe Road, Ilkley, LS29 9DZ

This event is an ideal opportunity to bring a friend to a u3a event for free. Just indicate how many additional places (maximum of two) required when booking.

Brian Waller, a member of our u3a will give a presentation and lead a discussion about the predicament of young children in Sub-Saharan Africa. Expect to hear about our colonial past as well as how these children exist in today’s supposedly more enlightened society.

Brian has recently published his findings in a book (see image). There will be the opportunity to buy a copy at a much discounted rate but that is not the purpose of the event. This is an opportunity to learn about and discuss the issues with an expert in the field of child poverty. Some of the issues discussed may be controversial, but all views and opinions will be welcome.

Brian has extensive experience working in the region as a teacher in Tanzania and, more recently, as a Director of an international charity working with families and children in need in Kenya and South Africa. He is currently advising a project in Western Uganda where children are severely malnourished and where many will not reach their fifth birthday.

There will be a suitable break for free tea / coffee.
