The original speaker is now unable to attend and Alison Harrop will now give a talk based on her historical novel, "The Mortimer Affair- Joan de Joinville's Story", published in September 2020 (under the pen name of Alice Mitchell) Alison will talk about "Did Edward II really die in Berkeley Castle in 1327?”

Her presentation is from the perspective of Joan de Joinville. She was married to the infamous Roger Mortimer who was influential in forcing the abdication of Edward II and was then accused of ordering his murder in Berkeley Castle. Whilst this might seem a long way from Yorkshire, Lady Joan was imprisoned in Skipton Castle from 1323 to 1326, only being released when Roger invaded the country with Queen Isabella. At that time, Skipton Castle had been confiscated by the Crown, the young Roger Clifford having been executed for his part in supporting Mortimer's earlier rebellion against the king. Alison is not a historian but did research for her novel and her ideas for its ending are based on the work of two eminent medieval historians of that period who believe King Edward did not actually die at Berkeley Castle.

Entrance is free and you are welcome to bring a guest.  Tea or coffee (no charge) from 10.00 and the talk starts at 10.30.
