Walking Hill and Dale
The Hill & Dale Walking Group was formed in September 2014 as a result of the well established Dales Walking Group deciding to take things a bit easier. The remit of the new group was to walk 10-12 miles at a good moderate pace with all members taking a turn at leadership if they felt able. This means we have a wide diversity of walks, all well within 1 hour’s drive from Ilkley and all finishing in a Dales café for refreshments.
However, on a couple of occasions we do venture further afield. First of all, instead of a Christmas ‘do’ we have a ‘Spring Fling’ in May when days are longer and the weather is kinder. Hiring the Good Neighbours minibus – the driver is one of our group - enables us to explore the delights of other areas and we enjoy a convivial meal together on the way home. Swaledale, Teesdale, NY Moors and Arnside have all been visited and graced us with fine weather. The second time we ‘break free’ is during the summer holiday period when we tackle a long-distance walk doing one section each Thursday and using public transport whenever possible.
As with most walking groups, conversation topics are many and varied and all opinions are aired. The one thing we have in common is a love of our amazing countryside. The photographers, botanists and birdwatchers are all catered for and whatever the weather we all go home feeling uplifted by a day of walking with good friends.
