Architecture Appreciation |
Description: |
If you love buildings, this could be the group for you! Although a few members have a background in architecture or related professions, most do not – they simply have a passion for architecture. The sessions involve illustrated talks (often researched and presented by group members, occasionally given by visiting speakers), discussions and light-hearted quizzes. All members are involved in deciding the programme and contributing to its success. Topics in 2023-24 included talks on: the architects Quinlan Terry, Yasmeen Lari, and CFA Voysey; retrofitting and sustainability; the architecture of Manchester’s Royal Exchange, mediaeval English cathedrals, skyscrapers in Texas and three cities in the heel of Italy; the use of wood and mud as building materials; the architecture of bridges and seaside piers and the renovation of Notre Dame in Paris. We had discussions or short presentations on: repurposed buildings, architectural space and Crystal Palace, and we had a light-hearted quiz. Recent visits to Leeds have included looking at architecture from a geographer’s viewpoint, visiting CEG at Kirkstall Forge to hear about their work there and visiting Hyde Park Picture House for a guided architectural tour. |
