Name: |
Non-Fiction Book Group |
Description: |
The group meets once a month for a lively discussion of anything non-fiction, from economics to history, technology, and popular science. But the caveats for selection are no weighty tomes that should have had a copy editor before publishing, and nothing that is unreasonably costly or difficult to acquire. Books are first proposed and voted on by the group to create a shortlist. Then each member selects a book from the shortlist and leads its discussion. Here is what we will be reading in the next few months: August 15: Gawande, Atul. (2015). Being Mortal: Illness, Medicine and What Matters in the End September 19: Atkins, Chris. (2020). A Bit of a Stretch: The Diaries of a Prisoner October 17: A ‘Mystery’! Precise title depends on what the Ilkley Literature Festival is discussing on that day! November 21: Van Tulleken, Chris (2024). Ultra-Processed People: Why Do We All Eat Stuff That Isn’t Food … and Why Can’t We Stop? December 19: Hoggart, Richard. (1991). The Uses of Literacy January 16: Schumacher, E.F. (1993). Small Is Beautiful: A Study of Economics as if People Mattered Note change of meeting time: 2:30-4:00 |
