More than 20 u3a members have been meeting informally after attending Third Age Trust briefings on AI for smartphones, tablets and personal computers. AI has developed rapidly over the past six months and now affects many areas of everyday life. We are therefore giving the group a more formal structure.

To reflect members' different interests, we have three or four subgroups. They meet separately and share their findings with the main group. Current topics include finance and security, AI in the news, whether AI is conscious, and practical use of AI on different devices. Examples include enhancing photos, researching family history and creating holiday itineraries.

About the existing members: Everyone already uses AI regularly on a range of devices. Most use ChatGPT, Copilot or Gemini, mainly the free versions, although some pay for subscriptions. This is not a beginners' group. Its purpose is to help members explore how AI supports everyday tasks, serve as research assistants and much more.

Online Foundation courses run by the Third Age Trust are available for u3a members who would like to build their confidence before joining. For those who regularly use Google search, it is a real eye opener. Find out more and book on this link. Starts 2 pm Monday 2nd November

Joining a subgroup is optional. It gives you the opportunity to explore an AI topic in greater depth and then share what you learn with the wider group.

Times:

The main group will meet from 10am to 12 noon on 3rd Monday of each month. The first meeting is 18th January 2027. Subgroups arrange their own meetings, usually once between each main group meeting.
