Architecture Appreciation

If you love buildings, this could be the group for you! Although a few members have a background in architecture or related professions, most do not – they simply have a passion for architecture. The sessions involve illustrated talks (often researched and presented by group members, occasionally given by visiting speakers), discussions and light-hearted quizzes. All members are involved in deciding the programme and contributing to its success.

Topics in 2021-22 included talks on: the architects Hundertwasser and Lubetkin, Heritage Engineering, Yorkshire Villages of Vision, Vernacular Architecture in the Pennines, the varied architecture in Ipswich and several midlands villages, Architecture with Engineering, Embedded Energy in buildings, a new cultural centre in Saudi Arabia and Sykes Churches in East Yorkshire.

We watched a film on the architecture and construction of Coventry Cathedral and had discussions on "unusual buildings", "architecture with a message", and "architectural recommendations".

Past visits have included Hull, Leeds University, Bradford’s Little Germany, Victoria Gate in Leeds and Farnley Hall.
