Name:

Architecture Appreciation

Description:

If you love buildings, this could be the group for you! Although a few members have a background in architecture or related professions, most do not – they simply have a passion for architecture. The sessions involve illustrated talks (often researched and presented by group members, occasionally given by visiting speakers), discussions and light-hearted quizzes. All members are involved in deciding the programme and contributing to its success.

Topics in 2022-23 included talks on: the architects Spence, Hadid, Casson and Gaudi, Heritage Engineering; the conservation of old buildings; Art Deco in New Zealand and Australia; the architecture of northern town halls, shopping centres, Bridgewater Hall and the Sainsbury Centre at UEA; the varied architecture in Oundle and Ashton; the revival of classical architecture in the 20th and 21st centuries. We had discussions or short presentations on: railway architecture, repurposed buildings, the Ilkley Design Awards and Lutyens in New Delhi and we had a light-hearted quiz.

Recent visits to Leeds have included looking at waterfront buildings, Art Deco buildings and those incorporating terra-cotta tiles.  We were also lucky enough to have a tour inside Heathcote, Ilkley, designed by Lutyens.
