Architecture Appreciation |
Description: |
If you love buildings, this could be the group for you! Although a few members have a background in architecture or related professions, most do not – they simply have a passion for architecture. The sessions involve illustrated talks (often researched and presented by group members, occasionally given by visiting speakers), discussions and light-hearted quizzes. All members are involved in deciding the programme and contributing to its success. Topics in 2024-25 included talks on: the architects: Palladio, Santiago Calatrava and Harry Sudbury, and one speaker gave an overview of many more architects; the architecture in: Chinese cities, India’s golden triangle, Hebden Bridge and Manchester; the architecture of: libraries, repurposed buildings, an unusual bridge, mausolea, Beverley Minster, Eltham Palace and the buildings of Hausa people; and we caught up with the Ilkley Design Awards, the Stirling Prize contenders and winner, the reopening Notre Dame in Paris and what is happening at Grenfell Tower. Spring/summer 2025 visits included looking at architecture from rooftop vantage points in Leeds, visiting Saltaire Church to hear about the renovation work there and visiting Bradford’s Little Germany and also Central Bradford for architectural tours. |
