To many, Orkney may just be a name on a weather map tucked away north of even the Scottish mainland. Its isolation does, however, belie its central importance regarding the first Neolithic culture in Britain and the emergence of Scotland as we know it today.

From pre-historic peoples to the Picts, the Vikings and into medieval times, humans have left their mark on the landscape and culture of Orkney complementing its splendid array of scenery and wildlife.

The presentation gives not only an overview of Orkney's two main historic periods but also refers to Orkney's dramatic role in both world wars and a taste of its modern day island life.
