In 1962, as a very naïve nineteen year old, I left home against my parent’s wishes, to go to Genoa, in Northern Italy to be an au pair. In that year, I had myriad adventures and grew up.

When the year ended I returned to England but quite quickly met and married

an Italian. He was from a more southern area of Italy and visiting his family for the first time provided a few shocks as well as the best food I have ever

eaten.
